How to Open a Forex Trading Account: Step by Step (2026)

Opening a forex account takes about 15 minutes of forms plus a verification wait. The real work is choosing the right broker entity, account type and leverage before you deposit. CFD trading is high risk.

Auron FX is an independent guide, not a broker. The buttons to brokers on this page are partner links: if you register through them we may receive a payment from the broker, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we write about risks and limits.

The short version

You need an email address, a phone number, an identity document and a proof of address. The registration form itself is short. What decides whether your experience is good or bad is what you choose before and after the form: the legal entity, the account type, the leverage and your security settings. Forex and CFDs are leveraged products, and a large share of retail accounts lose money, so treat the first weeks as learning, not earning.

Before you register: country, broker and legal entity

Do these three checks first. They take ten minutes and prevent most of the problems readers write to us about.

  1. Is trading allowed for you? Rules differ by country and change over time. Check your national regulator or central bank, and read our note on is forex legal in your country. Some brokers do not accept residents of certain countries, for example the United States for many offshore firms. The broker country list is on its own site.
  2. Which company will actually hold your account? Large brokers are groups. A client in Europe, one in South Africa and one in Asia may be served by different companies with different licences and different protections. In the registration form or the client agreement, find the exact company name and then look it up in the regulator register. Our broker reviews state, where we could verify it, which entity serves which region.
  3. Is the website the real one? Type the address yourself or use a link from a source you trust. Fake sites copy real brokers closely. Our guide to forex scams shows the usual red flags.

Regulation does not protect you from trading losses, and many brokers serve clients in your region through an offshore entity with lighter oversight. That is not automatically a reason to avoid a broker, but you should know it and weigh it. For a full method see how to choose a forex broker.

Open a demo account first

A demo account uses virtual money and live prices. It is free and usually needs only an email address. Use it for at least a couple of weeks to learn how to place an order, set a stop-loss, read your margin level and see how a spread affects your first minute in a trade. A demo does not show every real-world effect, such as nerves and slippage in fast markets, but it removes the beginner mistakes that cost real money. More in how to use a demo account.

Step-by-step: how the registration works at most brokers

Each broker words its screens differently, but the order is almost always the same. Our broker-specific walkthroughs are listed in the table below.

  1. Open the registration page on the official website. Choose your country of residence carefully, because it decides which legal entity and which payment methods you are offered.
  2. Enter your email and a password. Use a password that you use nowhere else, ideally from a password manager. Leave optional fields you do not understand empty.
  3. Confirm email and phone. You will get a link or a one-time code. Without it the account stays limited.
  4. Complete the personal profile: full name and date of birth exactly as on your passport or ID, address, and usually a short questionnaire about your experience, income and trading goals. Answer honestly. The questionnaire exists so the broker can warn you if the product is unsuitable.
  5. Open a trading account inside the client area (often called Personal Area or Members Area). Choose the account type, platform, currency and leverage described below.
  6. Upload verification documents (KYC). Some brokers let you trade a small amount before verification; most require it before withdrawals.
  7. Download the platform or use the web terminal and log in with the account number, password and the exact server name the broker shows you.

KYC: documents and how to avoid rejection

KYC means "know your customer". Brokers must check who you are to fight fraud and money laundering. You normally need two documents.

DocumentUsually acceptedCommon reason for rejection
Proof of identityPassport, national ID card or driving licenceBlurry photo, cut corners, expired document, name that differs from the profile
Proof of addressRecent utility bill, bank statement or official letter, often dated within the last three monthsOld date, no full name or address visible, screenshot instead of the original file

Photograph documents on a flat surface in daylight, with all four corners visible. Enter your name exactly as on the document, including the order of the names. If your address is in a language the broker does not read, ask support in advance what translation they accept. Review times differ from minutes to a few working days. Do not send documents by email or chat to anyone who is not the verified support channel inside your client area.

Choosing an account type

Most brokers offer two families of accounts. Names differ, but the logic is the same.

  • Commission-free (standard type): the cost is built into a wider spread. Simple to understand, so it is the usual starting point for beginners.
  • Raw-spread or ECN type: a tighter spread plus a separate commission per lot. It can be cheaper for frequent traders, but it is harder to compare costs.
  • Cent or micro accounts: offered by some brokers so you can practise with real money in very small sizes. Check the exact terms in your own account.

Compare real costs with our guide to spread, commission and swap. If you cannot say how much a trade costs you before pressing the button, pick the simplest account.

Leverage, platform and currency

Leverage lets you open positions larger than your deposit. It multiplies losses as much as gains. Some brokers allow very high levels; a beginner is usually safer far below the maximum, and often the sensible choice is the lowest leverage that still allows your planned position size. Read lots, pips and leverage before deciding.

Platform: MetaTrader 4 is older and simple, MetaTrader 5 has more instruments and tools, and several brokers add their own web terminal or app. Differences are covered in MT4 vs MT5.

Account currency: pick the currency you deposit in, when possible. Converting at the broker and again at your bank can cost more than the spread.

Security settings to switch on the same day

  • Two-step verification (authenticator app preferred over SMS) on the client area.
  • A separate trading password, different from the cabinet password, and never reused.
  • Your real phone number and email, so you can recover access. Many scams begin with a fake "support" message after an account is hijacked.
  • A habit: the broker will never ask for your passwords in chat, and a "manager" has no reason to ask you to pay to a private card.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to open a forex account?
The form takes around 15 minutes. Email and phone confirmation are quick, and document verification can take from minutes to a few working days depending on the broker and the quality of your documents.
Do I need to verify my identity before trading?
Policies differ. Some brokers allow limited trading before verification, but nearly all require full verification before you can withdraw money, so it is best to do it straight away.
Should I open a demo or a real account first?
Start with a demo. It costs nothing and lets you learn the platform, lot sizes and stop-loss rules without risking your savings. Move to a small real account only when you follow a written plan.
How much leverage should a beginner choose?
Lower is safer. Leverage multiplies losses as well as gains, so choose the lowest level that still lets you open your planned position size, not the maximum the broker allows.
Can I have accounts with several brokers?
Yes, many traders do, but each one has its own verification and risks. For a beginner one account at a time is easier to manage.
Is it safe to send my ID to a broker?
Upload documents only inside the client area on the broker official website. Never send them to a chat contact or a "manager", and check the legal entity and licence before you upload.
Which broker is best for beginners?
There is no single best broker. It depends on your country, budget and how you plan to trade. Compare the table above, read the reviews and try our AI matching assistant.
